Dr Esma Breytenbach is a specialist psychiatrist working with adolescents and adults. Her collaborative, trauma-informed approach integrates medical expertise with psychological insight to support resilience, emotional wellbeing and lasting personal growth.

Dr Esma Breytenbach is a Specialist Psychiatrist with experience across public-sector psychiatry and private practice, working with adolescents and adults across a broad range of psychiatric presentations. Her work is characterised by a psychologically informed, trauma-sensitive approach, with particular interests in psychodynamic psychiatry, neuropsychiatric disorders, complex personality presentations, and the long-term psychological impact of trauma. She brings together medical expertise and psychological depth, supporting patients in understanding not only their symptoms but also the underlying processes that shape emotional wellbeing and resilience.

Dr Breytenbach obtained her medical degree (MBChB) from the University of the Free State and completed her specialist psychiatric training through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (FCPsych SA) and the University of the Witwatersrand, where she completed her Master of Medicine in Psychiatry (MMed). Her postgraduate research focused on neuropsychiatric disorders, reflecting an enduring interest in the interface between psychiatry, neurology, and complex medical conditions. During her years in the public sector, she worked as a Medical Officer and Registrar in Psychiatry across acute inpatient units, tertiary psychiatric hospitals, and community-based services. She also gained valuable experience in specialised psychotherapy units and child and adolescent psychiatry, broadening her understanding of developmental and personality-related presentations.

Alongside her clinical work, Dr Breytenbach has remained actively engaged in academic psychiatry, with particular interests in neuropsychiatric disorders, resilience, and trauma-informed psychiatric care. Her work has focused especially on improving understanding of the psychological impact of trauma and supporting survivors of sexual abuse. She remains committed to integrating contemporary research into clinical practice and values scholarship that advances both scientific understanding and compassionate patient care.

Dr Breytenbach's professional strengths lie in advanced psychological formulation, trauma-informed care, and the integration of medical, psychological, relational, and developmental perspectives. She has additional training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and incorporates psychodynamic principles into her psychiatric practice, with an ongoing interest in psychoanalytic thinking. Her approach is evidence-based, collaborative, and psychologically grounded, placing particular emphasis on the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for lasting change. Rather than focusing solely on symptom reduction, she aims to foster psychological integration, resilience, and sustained personal growth through thoughtful, individualised care.

She holds specialist qualifications through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (FCPsych SA) and a Master of Medicine in Psychiatry (MMed). Her ongoing professional development spans psychodynamic psychiatry, psychoanalysis, trauma-informed care, neuropsychiatry, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, reflecting a continued commitment to lifelong learning and clinical excellence.

Outside of her professional work, Dr Breytenbach enjoys spending time in nature, hiking, and training her dogs. She values time with family and friends and has a particular appreciation for surrealist art. She also enjoys true crime literature and documentaries, interests that reflect her enduring curiosity about human behaviour, complexity, and the stories that shape our lives.
