Get to know Jozef

Dr Jozef Breedt is a Specialist Psychiatrist with experience across both public-sector psychiatry and private practice, working with children, adolescents, and adults across a wide range of psychiatric presentations. His clinical work is grounded in careful diagnostic reasoning, developmental understanding, and an appreciation for the complexity that often characterises mental illness across the lifespan.
Academic Background
He obtained his medical degree (MBChB, Cum Laude) from the University of Pretoria and completed his internship within the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex, followed by community service at Witbank Hospital. These early training years provided broad exposure to acute psychiatric care and the practical demands of working within resource-constrained systems. He later completed his specialist psychiatric training within the Wits Circuit, obtaining his Master of Medicine in Psychiatry (MMed) through the University of the Witwatersrand and completing his specialist examinations through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa, graduating with distinction. He holds the FCPsych (SA) and Diploma in Mental Health (SA), both awarded Cum Laude.
Specialised Training
During his specialist training, Dr Breedt gained extensive experience across general adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, forensic psychiatry, substance and addiction psychiatry, and consult and liaison psychiatry. He worked in specialised maternal mental health and neuropsychiatry clinics, deepening his interest in complex, overlapping presentations and the interface between psychiatric, neurological, and psychosocial factors.
Continued academic contributions
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Breedt has remained actively involved in academic psychiatry. His contributions include mentoring medical students and junior colleagues, publishing peer-reviewed research, and presenting at national mental health conferences. He continues to maintain academic ties and serves as a Clinical Trainer at Stellenbosch University, contributing to the development of future clinicians.
Clinical Approach
Dr Breedt’s clinical approach is evidence-based, thoughtful, and collaborative. He values integrated care and works closely with multidisciplinary colleagues to support comprehensive assessment, formulation, and treatment planning. His work is characterised by clinical precision, developmental sensitivity, and a steady, reflective approach to complex psychiatric presentations. The therapeutic relationship is at the core of Dr Breedt’s work and he strives to provide a safe, non-judgmental space with unconditional positive regard for patients.
Outside the practice
Personally, Dr Breedt enjoys physical activity and maintains that physical resilience builds mental resilience. He believes in an open-minded approach to mental healthcare and emphasises the importance of physical health and nutrition in achieving and maintaining good mental health.
