Get to know Juan-Mari

Dr Juan-Mari Kruger is a Specialist Psychiatrist with over a decade of experience across high-acuity public psychiatry and private practice. Her work spans general adult, child and adolescent, forensic, and substance use psychiatry, with a particular interest in psychological complexity, meaning, and the cost of sustained responsibility. She brings together clinical depth, systems thinking, and a psychologically informed leadership lens in both her clinical and consultative work.
Academic background and public sector experience
Dr Kruger obtained her medical degree (MBChB) from the University of the Free State and completed her specialist psychiatric training at Fort England Psychiatric Hospital, a large tertiary government institution with extensive forensic, inpatient, and outreach services.
During her years in the public sector, she worked as a Medical Officer, Registrar, and later Consultant Psychiatrist, holding senior responsibility for acute involuntary inpatient units, coordinating regional child and adolescent outpatient services, and overseeing an inpatient substance rehabilitation programme. She was also regularly involved in court-ordered forensic psychiatric assessments, including work with state patients and within maximum-security settings. Alongside her clinical duties, she contributed to teaching, supervision, and service-level leadership.
Private practice focus
Since entering private practice in 2023, Dr Kruger has focused on providing psychologically informed, individualised psychiatric care to adolescents and adults. She treats a broad range of mental health conditions, with particular interests in treatment-resistant presentations, neurodiversity, comorbid pain disorders, cognitive impairment, and substance use disorders. She forms part of a multidisciplinary ketamine-assisted treatment team and works collaboratively with other clinicians to support depth-oriented, long-term recovery rather than symptom containment alone.
Senior executive leadership expertise
Since 2021, Dr Kruger has also worked with senior executives, leaders, and high-performing professionals navigating burnout, identity strain, and meaning-related distress. This work explores the psychological demands of leadership, decision-making under pressure, and the often-unspoken emotional toll of sustained performance. She completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with distinction (cum laude), deepening her understanding of organisational systems, leadership dynamics, and complexity at scale.
Professional Strengths
Her professional strengths lie in advanced psychological formulation, a high tolerance for clinical and systemic complexity, and the capacity to think clearly in emotionally charged, high-stakes environments. She is particularly skilled at holding multiple perspectives simultaneously—clinical, psychological, organisational, and existential—without collapsing nuance into oversimplified explanations or premature solutions.
Her work is characterised by strong pattern recognition, depth of insight, and an ability to identify underlying dynamics that often remain unspoken yet decisive in both individual suffering and organisational dysfunction. Her approach is thoughtful, grounded, and psychologically precise, with a leadership style marked by integrity, reflective judgment, and a steady capacity to contain uncertainty while facilitating meaningful change.
Approach and professional development
Dr Kruger’s approach is evidence-based, collaborative, and psychologically grounded, with a strong Jungian and depth-psychological orientation. She places particular emphasis on integration and long-term psychological development, resisting reductive or purely symptom-focused models of care.
She holds a Diploma in Mental Health (SA), specialist qualifications through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (FCPsych SA), and a Master of Medicine in Psychiatry (MMed Psychiatry). Her ongoing professional development spans psychiatry, trauma-informed care, leadership studies, and psychological integration.
Outside the practice
Outside of her professional work, her interests include philosophy, creative writing, and metal music, an affinity she sees as a fitting counterbalance between intensity and introspection, structure and chaos.
